Purpose of the role 

We are looking for a friendly, patient, reliable and professional Personal Assistant to support our son, J.

J is a happy, cheeky and engaging young person with Autism. He is non-verbal and communicates through sounds, body language, facial expressions and gestures. He is able to clearly show when he is happy, excited, frustrated or upset, and will often take an adult's hand to indicate what he wants or gently move away or return items he does not want. The successful applicant will need a good understanding of Autism and alternative communication methods and be able to build a trusting relationship with J while supporting his individual needs.

The role involves providing 1:1 support to enable J to access enjoyable and meaningful activities within the community and at home. Activities may include visits to parks, walks using his SEN pushchair, watching vehicles along busy roads, swimming, trampoline parks, water play, outdoor play and other activities that match J's interests.

J requires support with all aspects of personal care, including toileting. He currently wears pads but will use the toilet when dry and prompted. Experience supporting children with additional needs and personal care is desirable.

As J has no awareness of danger or personal safety, he requires close supervision at all times. The Personal Assistant must be vigilant, able to assess risk and ensure J remains safe whilst supporting him to explore and enjoy activities in the community.

J is learning to tolerate being around other children and may require support with turn-taking, waiting and social situations. Patience, consistency and a calm approach are essential.

Purpose of the role

To provide support and assistance to my child, to enable him to achieve maximum personal benefit from his everyday life.

Main Duties 

Personal tasks:

  • Support with dressing / getting ready for time outside the house.

  • Supervise during toileting to avoid smearing.

  • Carrying out stimulating activities inside / outside the home.

  • Supervise my child in my absence.

  • Any other personal task that comes up.

General tasks - on a regular basis, as requested by me:

  • Cleaning and tidying up an area after use.
